This site will serve as a resource for teachers in BFA, MFA, PhD, and continuing-education photography\u00a0programs and departments of related subjects \u2015 photo history, criticism, and theory; media studies; visual culture; etc. \u2015 on the post-secondary level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/74.220.207.133\/~nearbyca\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_old3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7518\" title=\"teaching_logo_old\" src=\"http:\/\/74.220.207.133\/~nearbyca\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_old3-300x53.jpg\" alt=\"Teachingphoto.com logo\" width=\"240\" height=\"42\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_old3-300x53.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_old3-150x26.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_old3.jpg 357w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Premiered in 2004 by author, photographer, and educator Henry Horenstein, this site in its first incarnation ran under the name Teachingphoto.com, offering some substantial commentary by a number of contributors (including Horenstein). In 2009 it stopped publishing new pieces. After some discussion with its original publisher this past fall, we agreed that I&#8217;d take it over, so as to move it forward.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve renamed the site\u00a0<em>Teaching Photography<\/em> and, with the help of my steadfast webmaster John Alley, we\u2019ve renovated the site\u2019s layout and transformed its infrastructure, in order to enhance its functionality and expand its content substantially. If you subscribed to or visited the pilot version of the site, you\u2019ll see that we\u2019ve moved to the open-source blogware WordPress, which enables easier posting of new content from our end and easier commenting from your end as a reader.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachingphoto.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7520\" title=\"teaching_logo_new\" src=\"http:\/\/74.220.207.133\/~nearbyca\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_new3.jpg\" alt=\"Teaching Photography logo\" width=\"400\" height=\"44\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_new3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_new3-300x33.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_new3-150x16.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.nearbycafe.com\/artandphoto\/photocritic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/teaching_logo_new3-400x44.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve timed the debut of this reconfigured site to coincide with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spenational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Society for Photographic Education<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a02011 National Conference, taking place March 10-13 in Atlanta, GA. Both John and I will attend that event, as will our first sponsor,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sprintphotoed.com\" target=\"_blank\">Sprint Systems of Photography<\/a>, whose guiding light, Marlaine Noel, has elected to help support all four of the sites I publish as photo-education resources. (See below.)\u00a0You can find us at the Sprint table in the SPE Exhibits Fair. We&#8217;ve already imported into our new format about fifty percent of the site&#8217;s existing articles. Over the next month, we&#8217;ll complete that process, adding the portfolios of images that accompanied a number of those essays. Meanwhile, we&#8217;ll start posting new material.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re welcome to comment on those earlier posts, as well as on those to come. We envision this site as a forum for discussion of any and all issues relevant to post-secondary photo ed, and we invite your input. You&#8217;ll\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/teachingphoto.com\/?page_id=46\" target=\"_blank\">find the protocols for commenting here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re also open to proposals for new posts pertinent to the site&#8217;s theme, whether from photo teachers, current and former photo students, program administrators, or others with something cogent to say on the subject. Submissions can include unpublished essays as well as essays that have appeared in print but are not available online.
