My ophthalmologist, an intelligent, thoughtful black woman in her fifties (who, in my opinion, should know better), responded to my concerns about Trump, expressed during my December visit, by saying, “He’s from New York. Give him a chance!” I found that terrifying.

As far as I’m concerned, Trump has had many chances — and muffed them all. Otherwise it could have come straight from a despot like Hitler, whose collected speeches Trump reportedly kept in his night table for bedside reading.
