\"Memorial<\/a>From Hong Kong “The Silent Strength of Liu Xia,” the touring exhibition of 26 photos by the dissident Chinese photographer, artist, and poet,\u00a0went to Taiwan, for\u00a0inclusion in a group show titled “Witness to Silence,”<\/a>\u00a0which opened in Taipei on July 14 (Bastille Day, by coincidence).<\/p>\n

\"Taipei<\/a>Sponsored by Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior, the exhibition was organized by the group\u00a0The Memorial Foundation of 228<\/a> in cooperation with the National 228 Memorial Museum<\/a>. This show, curated by Wen Hsiang\u00a0Tsai in collaboration with Wei Wei Yin and Gloria Tao,\u00a0is taking place at\u00a0that museum.\u00a0Dedicated to the causes of peace, justice, and human rights, the museum is a fitting site for this group exhibition.<\/p>\n

(The number “228” refers to the day an infamous\u00a0massacre\u00a0began: February 28, or 02-28.\u00a0The slaughter\u00a0in\u00a0Taiwan began with\u00a0an anti-government uprising\u00a0on February 27, 1947, ruthlessly suppressed by the right-wing Kuomintang\u00a0(KMT) government under Chiang Kai-Shek. Death toll estimates range from 10,000 to 30,000 or more.\u00a0This incident marked the start of what became known as the Kuomintang’s “White Terror” period in Taiwan, during which thousands more died, went to jail, or simply disappeared.)<\/p>\n
