\u201cLa force silencieuse de\u00a0Liu Xia,\u201d an exhibition of 26 photos by the dissident Chinese photographer, artist, and poet, had its world premiere on\u00a0October 20, 2011, at the\u00a0Salle des Foug\u00e8res, Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt<\/a>,\u00a0a suburb of\u00a0Paris, France. It ran there through\u00a0November 9, 2011.<\/p>\n

La Chine connait une spectaculaire renaissance artistique et culturelle qui se situe souvent en marge des institutions officielles. Ces nouveaux artistes, appartenant \u00e0 la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration postr\u00e9volutionnaire, puisent dans la tradition de la peinture classique et de la calligraphie. Liu Xia, rare femme dans ce milieu plut\u00f4t masculin est la plus importante artiste photographe de ce mouvement.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mais l\u2019\u0153uvre de Liu Xia est un myst\u00e8re car elle n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9e au monde : on ne pouvait que la d\u00e9couvrir chez elle, privil\u00e8ge r\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 certains artistes chinois ou amis occidentaux de passage dans son petit atelier de P\u00e9kin. Les conditions de pr\u00e9sentation publique ne lui semblaient pas encore r\u00e9unies en Chine pour que son travail soit jug\u00e9 sur des crit\u00e8res artistiques et non politiques. Liu Xia est en effet l\u2019\u00e9pouse de Liu Xiaobo, Prix Nobel de la paix 2010, emprisonn\u00e9 pour son engagement en faveur de la d\u00e9mocratie.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bien que Liu Xia n\u2019ait jamais particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019action – non violente – de son mari, elle est assign\u00e9e \u00e0 r\u00e9sidence depuis 2011, sans jugement. Elle a alors accept\u00e9 de r\u00e9v\u00e9ler au monde une partie de son \u0153uvre, un ensemble bouleversant de tirages sur papier de grand format.<\/em><\/p>\n

Il se trouve que ces tirages uniques, s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s par la photographe elle-m\u00eame, sont parvenus \u00e0 la mairie de Boulogne-Billancourt par l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire de Guy Sorman, ami de l\u2019artiste. Nous avons donc l\u2019honneur de pr\u00e9senter en premi\u00e8re mondiale une exposition de 26 photographies, qui aura lieu dans la salle des Foug\u00e8res du 20 octobre au 9 novembre.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Liu<\/a>In addition to staging the international debut of this important exhibition, the Mairie de la\u00a0Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt subsidized the shipping of the prints from China to France, the mounting of the prints on their aluminum backing, the manufacture of the show’s shipping crates, the design of the original catalogue, and other aspects of the project, which contributions have made the subsequent tour of this exhibition possible. On behalf of Flying Dragon LLC, which manages the tour, and all the subsequent venues, we applaud their generosity and commitment to this project.<\/p>\n

The Mairie de la\u00a0Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt also\u00a0published a\u00a0catalogue of the exhibition, designed by Daniel Cohen.
