Coleman.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For logistical reasons, this showing of \u201cThe Silent Strength of Liu Xia\u201d\u00a0involved production of a second set of prints of the images. Those got made in Taipei and then shipped to Hong Kong, where they got framed and incorporated into an installation designed by the \u201cbehavioural artist\u201d Sanmu (\u4e09\u6728), who also performed during the opening ceremonies. He created a freestanding framework of walls bearing a greatly enlarged detail from one of Liu Xia\u2019s images (a cluster of beach rocks), against which the framed photographs leaned while resting on the floor, as finished works might get displayed in an artist\u2019s studio.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Tienchi Martin-Liao (president of the ICPC) had\u00a0arranged with Amnesty International\u00a0for the shipping to Hong Kong of \u201cThe Empty Chair,\u201d a work by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maartenbaas.com\/Main.asp?Section=Works&amp;Sub=%7B79813CA1-EFD7-4538-B746-082638A74EDC%7D\" target=\"_blank\">Dutch designer Maarten Baas<\/a>\u00a0created for AI. The catalogue was designed by Gary Tong of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tgif.com.hk\" target=\"_blank\">TGIF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ICPC&#8217;s daylong June 9 program began with short talks about Liu Xia and her work by curator A. D. Coleman, Tienchi Martin-Liao, Marian Botsford Fraser (chair of PEN International\u2019s Writers in Prison Committee), Prof. Joseph Cheng (director of the Contemporary China Research Project at City University of Hong Kong), and Sarah Hoffman (coordinator of PEN American Center\u2019s Freedom to Write Committee). The opening ceremony also included readings of several of Liu Xia&#8217;s and Liu Xiaobo&#8217;s poems, and a performance by Wong Loi Hung of short violin pieces.
