Photo Education Online (PEO) is a consortium of four autonomous yet interrelated websites designed to serve the photography education community in diverse ways. All four sites are published by Flying Dragon LLC, with noted critic, historian, curator, and educator A. D. Coleman as Executive Director and educator John Alley as Webmaster.
The PEO consortium includes:
The Photography Criticism CyberArchive (PCCA), at photocriticism.com. An online resource providing access to multiple texts by a diversity of past and present authors in the fields of history, criticism, and theory of photography from the medium’s inception through the present day. Key essays and complete books from such early commentators as W. H. F. Talbot, L. J. M. Daguerre, and Lady Elizabeth Eastlake through Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Caffin, and Sadakichi Hartmann to contemporary observers including Donna-Lee Phillips, A. D. Coleman, and Nancy Brokaw, among a host of others. Founded in 2003, the PCCA is subscription-based.
The New Eyes Project, at k12photoed.org. A resource for all those involved in K-12 photography education: teachers, students, program directors, sponsors, arts-education theorists, and anyone else interested in teaching photography to young people around the world. The New Eyes Project takes its cue from László Moholy-Nagy, who wrote, in 1932, “The illiterate of the future will be ignorant of the use of camera and pen alike.” Founded in 2006 by A. D. Coleman and John Alley as co-directors: now reformatted as a blog to encourage commentary from the community.
Teaching Photography, at teachingphoto.com. A resource for teachers of studio photography and related subjects photo history, criticism, and theory; media studies; visual culture; etc. on the post-secondary level. Under the name TeachingPhoto.com, this site was founded in 2004 by Henry Horenstein, author of such standard teaching texts as Black & White Photography, Beyond Basic Photography, Color Photography, and (with coauthor Russell Hart) Photography. In 2011 it became part of the PEO consortium, reformatted as a blog to encourage commentary from the community.
Photocritic International, at photocritic.com. Photocritic International is the controversial and widely read blog of critic, historian, curator, and educator A. D. Coleman. In its previous incarnation and under a different title (C: the Speed of Light), this site made its debut in spring 1995. Coleman thereby became the first photography critic (and one of the first art critics) to establish a beachhead on the World Wide Web. In that form and, since summer 2009, as a blog, this site has appeared online continuously since its inception, making Photocritic International the longest-lived website for a photography critic and one of the most enduring for any critic.
