UPCOMING EVENTS AND APPEARANCES (in reverse calendar order):

MONDAY, JULY 20, 2015

The podcast of my extended “Tangentially Speaking” conversation with Chrstopher Ryan (author of Sex at Dawn) is now posted on his podcast site at

http://chrisryanphd.com/tangentially-speaking/2015/7/18/134-david-steinberg-sexuality-authorphotographer

It was great to meet Chris in Portland and talk about a wide variety of topics (neither all about sex nor all about my book, This Thing We Call Sex, though both of those are there as well) as we sat in a neighborhood park. Chris is a fascinating man and a delightful interviewer.

My good friend Max Cameron is hosting this evening event, where I’ll be showing photos and talking about my experiences at over 30 of kink.com‘s Public Disgrace filmings.

Since 2009, I have been taking still photographs during video shoots at Kink.com – primarily at Public Disgrace shoots directed by Princess Donna Dolore. Much of what I have found there – intimacy, tenderness, attention to detail, deep emotional connections – is not what you might expect from a BDSM porn shoot. These qualities, together with equally remarkable qualities of humor, playfulness, intensity, and absurdity, make these shoots wonderful displays of human emotion ripe for picking with my camera.

Sometimes I shoot the “action” that will become the focus of the videos being produced at the shoots. But it’s the emotions, connections, and random moments that occur on the fringes of the shoots that interest me the most – unexpected revelations that occur when people forget about the cameras, conversations and sexual play between scenes, the facial expressions of people in the audience, moments of reflection or casual flirtation within the circus generated by producing intense BDSM video for a mass audience. These unaffected moments, combined with the power of deep connection between dedicated dominants and submissives, put a feast of raw humanity on display – a rare chance to capture the intimacy, vulnerability, power, and joy that lie at the heart of sexual experience.

At this informal evening event I will show a selection of favorite images that document the unique, intense, crazy, and loveable world of Kink.com and Public Disgrace, and talk about the particular culture of this world of BDSM porn production. I will also have copies of my books for sale, including my latest book, This Thing We Call Sex: A Radically Sensible Look at Sex in America.

Please come join us.

MARCH 13, 2015:  THIS THING WE CALL SEX  RELEASE DATE

My new book of writings, This Thing We Call Sex: A Radically Sensible Look at Sex in America, was published by Booktrope on March 13, 2015. For This Thing We Call Sex, I have re-edited the best and most relevant of my Comes Naturally columns and other writings, and added several previously unpublished  pieces, 40 of my fine art couples photos, and several poems.

Sometimes whimsical, sometimes philosophical, unapologetically political, and revealingly personal, This Thing We Call Sex documents the American sexual landscape from teenage sexuality to Viagra, swingers’ parties to erotic spirituality, lap dancing to women’s sexual liberation, fine art sexual photography to pornography, homophobia to BDSM — visiting sexual worlds that include erotic writer Marco Vassi, the Marquis de Sade, 19th-century feminist Victoria Woodhull, erotic photographer Jan Saudek, and porn producer kink.com.  The book calls on readers to question their sexual assumptions and fears, and to embrace sex as an opportunity for intimacy, self-understanding, and psychic adventure.
