Major Series: 2014
Toward Knowledge-Based Criticism. My reading of Thomas E. Patterson’s Informing the News: The Need for Knowledge-Based Journalism (Vintage Books, 2013) sparked this series of posts from early 2014. I extrapolated from his analysis of the current state of journalism, journalism education, and the industries that distribute journalism through the print, broadcast, and internet platforms, to apply his ideas to the state of criticism, and expand on them.
Robert Capa on D-Day: This series of posts began in June 2014 when the distinguished photojournalist J. Ross Baughman, who had contributed an earlier Guest Post on painters using photographs as source material, emailed to ask if I would consider publishing his analyses of Robert Capa’s D-Day negatives and the legend of their subsequent fate. It turned into a year-long investigation that resulted in the thorough debunking of this myth.
